How many photos should you put in an Instagram carousel?
Updated October 28, 2026 · by Yannik Goldgräbe, maker of curator
Instagram lets you post up to 20 photos and videos in one carousel. That is a ceiling, not a target. For one day or one scene, most stories are told in 4 to 8 slides. The better question is not how many, but whether each slide earns its place.
How to decide, slide by slide
- Pick one story. One carousel, one day or one scene: the hike, the beach afternoon, the dinner. A carousel feels long when it tries to cover a whole trip, not when it has many slides.
- Collapse the near-duplicates. Keep one frame per moment. Two shots of the same view are one slide, not two. This step usually decides the count for you.
- Choose the cover and slide two. The cover is what makes people stop. Slide two has to hold up on its own, because Instagram can show a carousel again to someone who scrolled past it, starting on a later slide.
- Make every slide add something. Mix wide views, details and faces. If a slide shows nothing the others don't, it goes, however nice it is.
- End on a closer. Finish with a frame that ends the day: the walk home, the last light, the empty table. Then stop. Four strong slides beat ten fine ones.
Rough guide by type
- One moment (a sunset, a dinner): a cover and two or three supporting shots.
- One day (a day trip, a wedding guest day): enough to go from morning to evening, usually 5 to 8.
- A photo dump (a week, a month): longer and looser is fine, because the mix is the point. Still no two slides that show the same thing.
The shortcut
curator makes this call for you. It groups your camera roll by day and place, collapses the near-duplicates, and picks as many photos as a day actually holds: sometimes four, sometimes more, and nothing at all when the day was weak. It orders them from cover to closer, crops them for Instagram and drafts a caption, each pick with a one-line reason. You swap anything you don't love and post through the normal Instagram share sheet. It never posts on its own.

Frequently asked
What is the maximum number of photos in an Instagram carousel?
Up to 20 photos and videos in one post. Every slide uses the same format as the first one, so crop them the same way before you upload.
How many photos should a carousel have?
As many as the story needs, usually 4 to 8 for one day or one scene. A long carousel is fine when every slide adds something; it gets tiring when slides repeat.
Is a photo dump different?
A dump can run longer and looser, because the mix is the point. The rule is the same: no two slides that show the same thing.
Can an app decide how many photos to post?
Yes. curator (iPhone) picks as many photos as a day or scene actually holds, sometimes four, sometimes more, and orders them into a carousel with a caption draft. You swap anything and post it yourself.
